Root Canal Treatment

A root canal is a dental treatment needed when the tooth’s root becomes inflamed and/or infected. The treatment involves removing the bacteria in the root canals of the infected tooth and then sealing the same tooth so that bacteria cannot re-infect.
The time varies depending on the severity of the infection. The dental procedure will usually take between 30 and 90 minutes. It is preferred to do the root canal treatment in multiple appointments to let the tooth dry and ensure complete disinfection before the final filling. Only certain root canal treatments, depending on the severity of the infection, can be completed in a single sitting. The number of root canals required will also affect the total time required for the procedure.
It’s a common misconception that a root canal is something to avoid at all costs due to it being painful. While this may have been the case decades ago, things are much different today. Having a root canal done is no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled. We make sure your tooth is completely numb so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure.
Dentists keep careful watch for any recurring infection in the tooth. It is important to watch for signs of infection such as:
  • Severe pain or pressure that lasts for more than a few days
  • Visible swelling inside or outside the mouth
You should experience continual gradual healing during the first week after your root canal.
It is normal to feel some tenderness in the area for a few days after your root canal. As you keep your jaw open for the entire procedure, some soreness after the treatment is also expected. However, we advise continuing with regular mouth opening to avoid any muscular spasm. We also advise reporting any excessive pain or pressure that lasts for more than a few days.
As stated above, you can expect some tenderness around the area where the root canal is done. Post root canal treatment instructions will usually include:
  • Wait to eat until all the numbing has come out of your mouth.
  • Avoid chewing or biting on the tooth until it has been restored by a crown.
  • Continue to brush and floss your teeth as normal.
  • Return to normal activities after the anesthesia has worn off.
